In the year of 1917 a boy of six glanced apprehensively at his mother as she straightened his wide collar~ he then stepped confidently on the stage of a small theater in Key Port, New Jersey.

Born Frederick Austerlitz in 1899 in Omaha, Nebraska, Fred Astaire first achieved fame in the dancing team "The Astaires" with his dancing partner, his sister, Adele.

And so began the career that was to make Fred Astaire an international legend in his own time.

His talents not only as a dancer, but as an actor, singer, and composer were developed in the Hollywood years, demonstrating his immense versatility as a performer and musician.

The Fred Astaire Dance studio tradition began in 1947, when Mr. Fred Astaire, considered to be the greatest multi-talented dancer of all time, personally developed a practical, interrelated dance curriculum for the first Fred Astaire Dance Studio on New York City’s Park Avenue.

Through continual development for more than half of a century, the Fred Astaire Dance Studios have strived to carry on the dream of Mr. Astaire and will continue to do so by having the highest possible standards set forth by the "Master of Dance."
